SISTER MARY BADER, D.C., TO TRANSITION TO NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE
Sister Mary Bader of the Daughters of Charity Will Conclude 18-Year Leadership of St. Ann’s
Washington, D.C. – Sister Mary Bader, D.C., will conclude her transformative leadership of historic St. Ann’s Center for Children, Youth and Families, a Catholic service agency founded in 1860 by the Daughters of Charity and chartered in 1863 by President Lincoln. Sister Mary Bader has been called by the Daughters of Charity – her religious community – to serve in a new leadership role as a member of the order’s Provincial Council. She will transition from St. Ann’s Center to St. Louis, MO, in late 2023.
Since 2005, Sister Mary Bader has guided St. Ann’s Center’s mission of supporting women and their children as they move from crisis to stability and lasting independence through St. Ann’s transitional housing programs and wraparound supports. Growth areas during Sister Mary’s tenure include:
- Transitioning a long-time residential program for young foster children into supportive, transitional housing for mothers and their children experiencing homelessness.
- Implementing St. Ann’s agency-wide Model of Care – a trauma-informed, strengths-based, developmental, and reflective model for helping families heal, grow, and progress to the future.
- Ensuring our residential programs and support services continued uninterrupted in 2020, keeping our doors open for the families who counted on St. Ann’s during the pandemic.
- Adopting Early Head Start at St. Ann’s Child Care Center, helping low-income residents and local families to access comprehensive child development and family support services.
- Establishing St. Ann’s Community Outreach Program, improving access to baby formula, baby food, clothing and other critical staples for our resident mothers and families in our community.
- Establishing St. Ann’s Education & Employment Program, helping resident mothers set
and reach their academic and professional goals.
His Eminence Wilton Cardinal Gregory, Archbishop of Washington, reflected on Sister Mary’s impact:
“Our Archdiocese and the entire metro Washington, D.C. community are tremendously grateful for the caring and effective leadership of Sister Mary Bader over her past 18 years of service at St. Ann’s Center as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
“Sister Mary has enabled countless families in our region to heal, thrive, and grow toward bright new futures. Sister Mary - thank you for all you have done for the mothers and their children who have called and continue to call St. Ann’s Center home. You will be greatly missed and fondly remembered for your kindness, generosity, and commitment to the mission of St. Ann’s Center for Children, Youth, and Families.”
St. Ann’s Board of Directors has formed a search committee for a new CEO to continue, adapt, and grow our mission. Meanwhile, Daughters of Charity will continue to live and volunteer at St. Ann’s – carrying on the tradition of caring that founders St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac began in 1633.
